Real-f : File Under Freaky
October 11, 2011
If you have tried the ShapeMe app and found that having a 3D printed bobble head was so awesome you are ready for the next step, you might want to try Real-f, or, you might not..
Buyers can get a 3D “face mask” for US$3,920 (additional copies cost just US$780 each). Each replica of one’s head costs US$5,875 (copies: US$1,960).
What really bothers me is I do not know how the kid in the middle is holding his mask on???

Seriously? Who in their right mind is going to pay $3,920 for a stupid mask? And $5,875 for a full head?! That’s absurd. You see Shapeways…you’ve done nothing to make 3D printing affordable. Your material costs are ridiculously expensive. I’d be aware of the DIY movement. You’re screwed when people realize they can build equipment for a quarter of the cost of your crap. Good luck, fools.bvac (October 11, 2011 at 1:30 pm)

Steve, you may not understand that this is a product out of Japan in no way linked to Shapeways, you may also have missed the element of humor when it is filed under freaky. good luck with printing your own stupid mask with your DIY equipment.Steve McGee (October 11, 2011 at 12:12 pm)
But I wouldn’t print a mask, because that’s just stupid…..Paul King (October 11, 2011 at 3:24 pm)
That’s just fine Steve. I think it is a damn fine product especially considering a photoshoot is needed to capture the images need for the 3D print.Lincoln (October 11, 2011 at 8:48 pm)
Steve, SW is the least expensive 3-D printing service that currently exists. In some cases by as much as 10 times cheaper. I have looked into over 20 different companies that do 3-D printing. Their costs are expensive per piece only when compared to traditional manufacturing techniques if you wanted to make thousands of the same thing. But the catch with that is SW is still cheaper if you just want to make one or a few of something. If you wanted to make something small in plastic it may cost a few pennies from an injection mold per piece, and perhaps $5-$10 at SW. But, you would have to pay thousands of dollars to get the mold made, and make thousands of copies of the piece to get the few pennies price. You wrote: “But I wouldn’t print a mask, because that’s just stupid…..” Well, here’s the good news, you don’t have to get a mask printed! Turns out SW wasn’t saying in this post that Steve McGee is being forced to spend a ton of money to print a mask. Seems like you need a vacation. For a post like this to invoke such an angry rant, I feel bad for what ever stress you must be under. Please take care of that so you can live a happy life where such unimportant things don’t get you so worked up. You deserve to be happy, we all do.George Bell (October 12, 2011 at 8:46 pm)
Skin tones are very difficult to reproduce correctly, these folks are to be commended for that. It is amazing how close the masks are to real skin color!YoMama (October 13, 2011 at 8:37 pm)
what kind of douche would buy this?John Holmes (October 13, 2011 at 8:42 pm)

They could try but you may have trouble with the size restrictions with a minimum length of 1 inch in any axis.Glenn Slingsby (October 14, 2011 at 4:40 pm)
Ahahahaha!… and to paraphrase YoMama before that “What kind of douche would buy THAT!”
