# Faceture : Handcrafted Works with a Digital Aesthetic

February 12, 2012

[Phil Cuttance](http://www.philcuttance.com/) has created an elegant tool to make a series of faceted forms resembling digitally optimized products. Take a look at the mesmerizing video which shows the works being produced and soak in the refined process and beautiful results.

> _The FACETURE series consists of handmade faceted vessels, light-shades_
> _and table. Each object is produced individually by casting a water-based_
> _resin into a simple handmade mould. The mould is then manually_
> _manipulated to create the each object’s form before each casting, making_
> _every piece utterly unique._

> _The FACETURE process_
> _First the mould of the object is hand-made by scoring and cutting a_
> _sheet of 0.5mm plastic sheet. This sheet is then folded, cut and taped_
> _into the overall shape of the product that is to be cast. The mould’s_
> _final shape, and strength, is dictated by which triangular facets I pop_
> _in and out. I do this each time I ready the mould for the next object,_
> _meaning that no two castings are the same. I then mix a water-based_
> _casting resin that is cast in the mould where it sets solid._
> _The resin is poured into the hollow mould and rolled around to coat_
> _and encase the sides, controlled by me on the casting jig on the_
> _machine. The material soon sets creating a hollow solid object. Then_
> _another, different coloured measure of resin is poured into the same_
> _mould, and swirled around inside, over the first. When it has set, the_
> _mould is removed to reveal the solid set cast piece. The casting appears_
> _with sharp accurate lines and a digital quality to its aesthetic, a_
> _visual ‘surprise’ considering the ‘lo-fi’, hand-made process from which_
> _it came. The mould is then cleaned and ready for re-use._
> _Each vase is handmade, unique, and numbered on the base._
